Description
A stable and accurate LMG able to either fire accurate full-auto or, if that doesn’t do it for you, convert it into a deadly DMR with the included conversion kit.

The Akron HC is a LMG in PAYDAY 2, available to those who own the McShay Weapon Pack 3 DLC.

Overview

The Akron HC is one of two LMGs capable of aiming down sights and using custom optics, after the SG Versteckt 51D. It also sports the highest base accuracy, damage, and stability of all LMGs, with room to grow even more.

It is also by far the most modular LMG, capable of equipping not only an Exclusive Set, but can also opt for a DMR Barrel instead. As is, the Akron HC hits just as hard as a modified Deagle but in full auto, and can reach the second-greatest concealment of all LMGs. With the Exclusive Set, its ammo and rate of fire drastically increase, behaving similar to the Buzzsaw 42 but with greater accuracy/stability for a slight drop in damage. With the DMR kit, it gains a significant boost in damage per shot and accuracy at the cost of its ammo, making it far more formidable a long range, such as countering hostile Snipers.

However, the Akron HC has flaws, some constant and some unique to its different identities. No matter its configuration, its magazines are much smaller than most other LMGs (in fact, the smallest unmodified), its recoil is quite hard to control outside of short bursts, and its pickup remains shallow without Fully Loaded or the Exclusive Set. Even with the Exclusive Set, the high rate of fire will consume ammo that much faster and the gun possesses even wilder recoil, on top of constricting most other mod choices. As an LMG, it suffers from damage dropoff, hindering its long range capabilities when using the DMR Barrel, and the DMR Barrel cuts its magazine/ammo down to only 10 round magazines with 80 total bullets, making its potentially larger magazine modifications the only practical upside against DMRs like the M308 or KS12 Urban.

The Akron HC deals ludicrous damage in the hands of crew AI.

In the end, the Akron HC can be considered a jack-of-all-trades LMG, hypothetically filling any non-stealth role depending on what the user wants.

Summary

Pros:

• Highly customizable, fitting numerous different styles
• Highest starting damage, accuracy, and stability of all LMGs
• Can take custom optics and aim down sights like the SG Versteckt 51D rather than using a stationary bipod
• Exclusive set greatly increases ammo and rate of fire
• DMR Barrel directly increases damage
• Second highest concealment potential of all LMGs, only behind the SG Versteckt 51D
• Reloads fairly fast for an LMG
• Phenomenal weapon for crew AI

Cons:

• Sharp recoil in most configurations
• Affected by damage dropoff, dealing less damage to distant enemies
• Smallest default magazine capacity of 20, though this can be remedied with mods and/or Surefire
• Sub-par ammo pickup rate, the worst out of all LMGs
• Smallest LMG ammo reserve at 160 rounds, though this can be remedied with Fully Loaded and/or the Exclusive Set
  • Exclusive Set's rate of fire boost also burns ammo quicker, necessitating more reloading
• Building for concealment stunts accuracy/stability

Tips

• Maximum concealment is 16 via Buckeye Suppressor with Optical Illusions Ace, Short Barrel, Starlight Stock, and a concealment stat boost. Taking the Exclusive Set adds +3 concealment, and with the concealment boost results in 14 total concealment.
• The Akron HC can achieve 100 accuracy with an accuracy stat boost, Biometric Sight, Tactical Compensator, and a War-Torn Stock. However, taking The Professional Ace with its Buckeye Suppressor can also achieve maximum accuracy with extra stability.
  • Stable Shot basic and Steady Grip ace also supply cheap but useful stability boosts to help tame the recoil.
• Without the Exclusive Set, Fully Loaded gives 200 total rounds. With the Exclusive Set, Fully Loaded doubles the amount, to 400. The Exclusive Set also boosts ammo pickup to 6-12 and sets the default ammo to 320 without the skill.
  • Because this Set increases the Akron's ammo pickup rate, it can not benefit from Fully Loaded Ace.
• It is strongly recommended to take either the Standard Magazine or the Large Magazine, as the default 20 round magazines are too small for the gun, even with the modest rate of fire.
• Berserker at 10% health with Underdog active will let the Akron HC kill Maximum Force Responders in one headshot within its effective range, similar to breakpoints for weapons like the White Streak and Frenchman Model 87. This will not one-shot said enemies that are too far away due to damage dropoff.
• Though the DMR Barrel pushes the damage into the 170s, it is not sufficient for killing most enemies in a reduced number of shots, especially with damage dropoff.
  • Unlike other DMR Barrels however, the Akron's DMR Barrel does not reduce its ammo pickup rate.
  • However, with critical hits from Low Blow/Unseen Strike, the DMR Barrel will kill Tasers and Medics in one critical headshot. Bulldozers will fall from only a few headshots. Due to the magazine penalty from the mod, taking Surefire and/or Lock N' Load is recommended, especially if one wishes to avoid the concealment penalties from the larger magazines.

Although the main flashlight has a toggle switch, the laser sight component of the LED Combo is pressure-activated, meaning the laser will stay on as long as the pressure switch is depressed. This switch is not placed where it should be, however (on foregrips, magazine wells, etc...) and is instead ziptied to the main taclight, leaving no plausible mean for the user to toggle it without awkwardly moving their off hand off the weapon and gripping the attachment itself. After the release of the Gage Mod Courier DLC, it was reverted to the regular sight's red dot. It is functionally the same as the standard Military Red Dot Sight, but the sight's casing is tan instead of black with the line "A-10" scrawled on near the adjustment knob. The sticker on the lens cap's interior also says "I <3 Payday" instead of having a picture of an American flag. This sight was based on the Aimpoint CompM2 optic. Attaching a folding stock to a conventional AR-15 type rifle is impossible in real life as they use direct impingement gas operation, which requires a buffer spring that is stored in the stock to cycle the gun. Trivia

• The Akron HC appears to be based on the Ohio Ordnance H.C.A.R., a modernized M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle.
  • This is even alluded to in its name, as Akron is the fifth largest city in Ohio, and HC comes from the first two initials.
  • The Akron may also attach the Buckeye Suppressor. Ohio is nicknamed the Buckeye State.
  • Unlike the in-game Akron HC which is fully automatic, the base H.C.A.R. is restricted to firing semi-automatic and cannot be modified to fully automatic fire.
