Crude Awakening is a Heist in PAYDAY 2, released on June 28, 2023, contracted by Blaine Keegan. It involves the crew hitting SERA's oil rig to assassinate SERA's chief of security, Gabriel Santiago, and stealing pure petroleum to collapse the company and force Alice Rainey out of the oil industry.
Overview[]
Alice Rainey, having been almost removed from SERA leadership after the events of Hostile Takeover, has taken control of SERA's top offshore oil rig. She has stashed away all of her remaining funds in her private office, and places Gabriel Santiago in charge of the rig. Blaine Keegan tasks the crew with hitting the rig to put an end not just to Rainey, but to put SERA out of operations for the foreseeable future.

Tips
- The Parachute Entry will drop the crew over the upper helipad, which places the crew close to the server room.
- Buying the Extra Cash asset spawns in a zipline in the drilling tower that sends bags down to the boat. This makes the final escape much faster.
Walkthrough[]
Stealth
Office Area
The crew starts off on the boat, and must drive to the emergency docks to zipline up to the Office Area. To the left and up a ladder is the Laboratory where the sample validator and the first sample whiteboard can be found. To the right is the Admin office where the second sample whiteboard can be found.
The crew must go up a deck to the Living Quarters, where the server room can be found. The door to the server room can be opened by drilling, ECM, or keycard. Once inside, a usb drive must be found to access the servers. The usb drive is found in a cabinet located in either the Meeting Room, Laboratory, or Admin Office. Once obtained and plugged in, a computer in the Admin Office must be activated to update the shipping manifest.
At any point during the search for the server room and usb drive, the crew can find and process the pure oil sample. Six oil samples can be found in the Extraction Room, with one being the correct sample. Using clues found on whiteboards in the Admin Office and Laboratory, the crew can deduce the correct sample. The sample must then be taken to the Laboratory to be tested, with the pure sample successfully passing the test.
Processing Area
Once the shipping manifest is changed and the correct sample is found, the crew must make their way across the bridge to the Processing Area. Inside the pumping area, the crane must be lowered to the ship.
The crew must then connect the correct oil tank (highlighted with an interactible lever) to the pump. The pipe coming out of the top on the front of the oil tank is where the oil starts. Multiple pipes must be rotated into the correct position in order for the oil to flow properly. See below for a detailed explanation. Once connected, opening the oil tank and starting the pump begins the pumping process.
While pumping the oil, every 15 seconds there is a 10% chance for a random event to occur. If no event happens, the chance increases by 10% every 15 seconds until either an event occurs or the pumping is finished. The events will change depending on the difficulty selected. Once an event occurs, the chance is lowered back to 20% and the cycle begins again. Each event can only happen once, and only one event at a time may run.
If the firewall is tripped, the crew must find a laptop somewhere in the Processing Area. The laptop will always be on the lower level, either in the break room, on a barrel next to the blue tank, or on a crate between the red and yellow tanks. There is no time limit to disabling the firewall, however pumping will not resume until the firewall is disabled.
If Gabriel calls, the crew must find a phone somewhere on in the Processing Area. The phone will always be inside a orange cover, making it easier to spot. If the crew does not answer the phone within 17 seconds, an extra guard will be sent to investigate the area.
Drilling Tower & Escape
Once all the oil is pumped to the ship, the crew must make their way back down to the bridge and towards the Drilling Tower. All players must enter the caged area to proceed. Once inside, power must be cut to the security lasers. Entering the lasers before cutting the power will sound the alarm. With the lasers disabled, the crew must locate a crowbar and gas tank stashed somewhere in the Drilling Tower. Using the crowbar, the ventilation fan of the Command Room can be jammed. Once the lasers have been disabled and the fan jammed, the gas can be connected to the vent and turned on to kill Gabriel.
Once inside, the crew can take Gabriel's keycard and use it to unlock the doors to the upper level. Once the blowout preventor is disabled from the Drill Control Room, pressure must be built to the correct level. This can be done by turning four valves in the correct order, as Locke calls them out. Turning the wrong valve will reset the whole process.
Once the pressure is built, the switch can be thrown to start the drill. This will cause the alarm to go off, and the crew will have 3 minutes to escape the rig. The crew must run back the way they came, and down to the zipline where they initially entered the rig. Once down the zipline and onto the boat, the crew must escape to the oil tanker outside of the blast zone.
Loud
Office Area
The crew starts off on the boat, and must drive to the emergency docks to zipline up to the Office Area. To the left and up a ladder is the Laboratory where the sample validator and the first sample whiteboard can be found. To the right is the Admin office where the second sample whiteboard can be found.
Alternatively, the crew can parachute in via helicopter if said entrance is chosen. Doing so will automatically raise the alarm, but drops the crew directly onto the helipad. This skips having to drive to the rig and zipline up.
The crew must go to the Living Quarters, where the server room can be found. The door to the server room can be opened by drilling, ECM, or keycard. Once inside, after smashing the servers, a usb drive must be found to access the system. The usb drive is found in a cabinet located in either the Meeting Room, Laboratory, or Admin Office.
At any point during the search for the server room and usb drive, the crew can find and process the pure oil sample. Once the server is hacked and the correct sample is found, the crew must make their way across the bridge to the Processing Area. Inside the pumping area, the crane must be lowered to the ship.
The crew must then connect the correct oil tank (highlighted with an interactible lever) to the pump. The pipe coming out of the top on the front of the oil tank is where the oil starts. Multiple pipes must be rotated into the correct position in order for the oil to flow properly. See below for a detailed explanation. Once connected, opening the oil tank and starting the pump begins the pumping process. The police will attempt to stop the pumping at both the tank and the pump itself, requiring the crew to defend both spots.
While pumping the oil, after 80 seconds there is a 50% chance for the pumping to malfunction. Three valves will need to be turned in order for pumping to resume.
- The first valve is located in the upper-left corner of the Processing Area.
- The second valve is located on the bottom-middle of the Processing Area, behind the Red tank.
- The third valve is located in the back-right of the Processing Area, next to the door to the South Bridge.
Once each valve is turned, pumping will resume.
Drilling Tower & Escape
Once all the oil is pumped to the ship, the crew must make their way back down to the bridge and towards the Drilling Tower. A blowtorch must be acquired to cut into the drilling tower. On the North Bridge, both boxes of blowtorches can be found on the walkway between the Processing Area and the Bridge. On the South Bridge, the blowtorches can be found either next to the forklift or next to the fluid tanks. All players must enter the caged area to proceed.
The crew must then defeat Gabriel. Gabriel wears an experimental Murkywater combat suit, and is immune to all damage unless he is on fire. To defeat Gabriel, the crew must fill the pits around the area with oil and bait Gabriel into standing in one. Shooting the oil will set it and Gabriel ablaze, and make him vulnerable to player weapons. Gabriel will remain on fire for ~15 seconds, after which he will be extinguished and immune to player weapons again. The process must be repeated until Gabriel is killed.
Notes on Gabriel:
- Gabriel is immune to being set on fire by player-based weapons (excludes oil pits), and does not react to being set on fire.
- Gabriel is immune to knockdown, concussion effects, and electrocution.
- Gabriel is immune to the ECM feedback stun.
- Gabriel is immune to extra headshot damage. He can still take damage from headshots, but no extra damage will be dealt.
- Gabriel has a 50% resistance to explosive damage.
- Gabriel can tase the player if punched and deals 250% more damage than normal.
- Gabriel's health increases by an additional 10% for each heister (excluding bots) in the game.
Once Gabriel is dead, the crew can take his keycard and use it to unlock the doors to the upper level. Strategy[]
- The correct pure oil sample is indicated by two clues, one in each of the two labs on a white board. One indicate the color of the pipe (the color with the highest level of purity on the graph). The other indicates the name of the oil extract (there is text written under the name). Combining those two clues allow you to find the correct pure oil sample on the first try.
Stealth[]
- A helicopter with a searchlight will be circling the rig searching for the players. The helicopter acts as a camera, and entering the searchlight causes a suspicion meter to rise. Players should stay alert for the sound of the helicopter moving closer, in order to avoid the searchlight. The helicopter "camera" can still be disabled with ECMs like a regular camera.
- Shooting at the helicopter will sound the alarm.
Loud[]
- Alongside various explosive barrels, red oil pipes can be found around the rig. These can be shot to set them alight, and subsequently explode after a brief duration.
- Bring high DPS weapons in order to deal as much damage as possible to Gabriel Santiago when he is set ablaze. Bulletstorm may be helpful.
Pipe Layout[]
While the layout of the pipes in the Processing Area may appear random, the layout never actually changes and can be easily guessed depending on which side of the area the pump is on. The pump can change between the left side (Blue tank) and the right side (Yellow tank). More often then not, simply getting the first rotation correct is enough to find the correct path.
Blue Tank
- Left-side Pump
- The first pipe should be rotated to 3 o'clock, towards the Red tank.
- The next pipe should be rotated to 9 o'clock, towards the Red tank again.
- The pipe in front of the Red tank should be horizontal.
- The next pipe should also be horizontal.
- The pipe in front of the Yellow tank should be rotated so the oil is sent downwards.
- The next pipe should be rotated vertically.
- Rotate the final pipe towards the pump.
- Right-side Pump
- The first pipe should be rotated to 9 o'clock, away from the Red tank.
- The next pipe should be horizontal.
- The next pipe should be rotated so the oil is sent downwards.
- Rotate the final pipe towards the pump.
Red Tank
- Left-side Pump
- The first pipe should be vertical.
- The next pipe should be rotated to 6:30, away from the Yellow tank.
- The remaining pipes are all either straight or have only one correct rotation.

Variations[]
Office Area
- The server room can spawn in three possible locations.
- The cabinet with the usb drive can spawn in three possible locations.
- The correct oil sample is randomly chosen between one of six samples.
- When opening the door to the north bridge after collecting the correct sample, there is a 75% chance for an enemy to kick down the door if the heist has gone loud. See below for the enemy type.
Processing Area
- If the heist goes loud, two Marshal Shields and a Marshal Sharpshooter have a 50% chance of spawning in on the bridge to the Processing Area.
- The security room door can spawn in two possible locations.
- The pump generator can spawn on either the right or left of the pump crane.
- When pumping the oil in loud, the pipes have a 50% chance to malfunction.
- When pumping the oil in stealth, the phone Gabriel calls to is placed in one of three locations.
- When pumping the oil in stealth, the laptop to disable the firewall is placed in one of three locations.
Drilling Tower & Escape
- Bags thrown from the rig into the water can spawn in 8 different locations in the surrounding water.
- There is a 50% chance for two cloakers to smash in through the windows of the private office. They will drop smoke bombs upon entering the room, making it incredibly hard to see inside.
- There is a 50% chance for a cloaker to drop in from a vent in the Admin Office.

- On normal and hard, a shotgun FBI Heavy Response Unit will kick the door down.

Human Torch In the Crude Awakening job, kill Gabriel using three oil pits at most on the OVERKILL difficulty or above. Unlocks the "Gabriel’s Requiem" mask. |
As the description states, the crew must kill Gabriel in loud using three or fewer oil pits to light him on fire. This is easiest on Overkill, as Gabriel's health scales upward with the difficulty. Once Gabriel is lit on fire, each crew member must be ready to unload their weapons into him to deal as much damage as possible before the fire goes out.
Notes on Gabriel:
- Gabriel is immune to being set on fire.
- Gabriel is immune to knockdown, concussion effects, and electrocution.
- ECMs provide little use, as Gabriel is immune to the ECM stun.
- Gabriel is immune to extra headshot damage. It is recommended to bring weapons that have large ammo pools.
- It is not recommended to use explosives, as Gabriel has a 50% resistance to explosive damage.
- Take care to not get within melee range, as Gabriel can tase the player if punched and deals 250% more damage than normal.
- Gabriel's health increases by an additional 10% for each heister (excluding bots) in the game. If the player is having trouble, playing solo can reduce the amount of health Gabriel has.

As the crew escapes through the rig, a detour can be made to run back to the private office. The code can then be entered, allowing access to the office. Inside are four stacks of cash; two on a shelf and two in suitcases. The crew can either carry each bag down to the escape boat and secure them, or toss the bags out the window. If the bags are tossed out the window, they will spawn in four random locations in the waters below. The crew must then drive the escape boat over each bag to secure them.
On Very Hard and above, if the heist had gone loud before the drill was started, there is a 50% chance for two cloakers to spawn in the office. These cloakers will automatically drop smoke bombs, making it much harder to see.

Bugs[]
- When bagging the money in the private office, the player is scripted to comment. However, the dialog line chosen only has recorded lines for Dallas, Chains, and Houston.
- If a player goes into custody, they will respawn at the emergency dock when released.
- Enemies may refuse to spawn for a whole assault wave during the pipe and/or boss battle sections, making the heist significantly easier on higher difficulties should this occur.
Trivia[]
- Players can fall in the water via the helicopter entry instead of landing on the oil rig, thus immediately starting the heist in custody.
- Inside a locker, players can find a note that reads: "Hey you found this! Thanks for playing! - the PD2 Environment Art Team"
- The TV in the break room features a news report about the aftermath of the Hostile Takeover heist, as well as a mention to the Lost In Transit and Midland Ranch heists.
- The presence of armed law enforcement in the news imply the Hostile Takeover heist was canonically done in loud, similar to San Martín Bank via Vlad's Surprise and resulting in the subsequent heist.
- Bellmead Security Guards are present in the oil rig. In addition, the Bellmead Sharpshooters and Shields appear in this heist on loud as well.
- This is the only American heist where this happens.
