PAYDAY 3 is a co-operative first-person shooter action game created by Starbreeze Studios and published by Deep Silver and is the successor to PAYDAY 2. PAYDAY 3 was released on September 21, 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a 3 day early access given to those who preordered the Gold edition of the game.
Development
When PAYDAY 3 was announced very little information was shared. Following their acquisition of the PAYDAY IP in May 2016, Starbreeze has confirmed the development of PAYDAY 3. In 2017, they admitted that the Valhalla game engine was an incomplete product and unsuitable for active game development. The use of Valhalla was subsequently abandoned in favor of Unreal Engine 4, which was confirmed as of March 19, 2021. A gameplay trailer was shown at the Xbox Games 2023 Showcase, which showed the return of numerous characters and features, as well as new gameplay mechanics.
Reception
The game released to overall negative reviews, most due to the frequent server issues the game had during its first week. The PlayStation 5 version released as a beta build lacking much of the content in the final game, prompting more negative reviews. The game initially reached a “Very Negative” rating on Steam at 31%, until rising a few weeks later up to a "Mixed" 40%.
