The Frenchman Model 87 is a secondary weapon available in PAYDAY 2, available to players who own the Gunslinger Weapon Pack.

Overview[]

The Frenchman is a revolver like the Bronco .44, providing six shots before needing to reload, reloads all rounds at once, and does not take longer to reload when fully emptied. While the Frenchman is notably weaker than any of the other six shooters, it still does more damage than the Deagle and Baby Deagle, possessing 130 damage compared to their 120 damage. The Frenchman also has a superior ammo reserve than them with 66 rounds, bolstered by a more generous pickup rate than other revolvers or high power pistols.

However, the Frenchman is not without its flaws. Its damage will still make it difficult to kill Maximum Force Responders on difficulties above Overkill without supplementary skills, and will often take at least two headshots to kill most special units. It also has an incredibly shallow mod pool that makes it less versatile than the Deagle or Bronco: the only options are a longer/shorter barrel for more accuracy/concealment respectively, stability-enhancing grips, and a stat boost option. Lastly, while not a strict statistical drawback, the iron sights for the Frenchman are small and narrow and the only optics option for the gun, much like those of the Peacemaker .45, which can take time to get used to, especially for long-range shooting.

Overall, the Frenchman is best viewed as an interesting sidegrade between the Deagle and any of the other six shooters, trading raw power for superior ammo, though it can still kill most enemies in the same number of shots as the other stronger pistols with the right skills.

  • Only modification options are two barrel sizes, one grip option, and a stat boost of the user's choice; no option for any gadgets

Tips[]

  • The Mule Bone Grips option for the Frenchman is a straight upgrade, adding +4 stability without any drawbacks.
  • There is no difference in reload speed when there are 0 rounds left to fire versus 5. This encourages all 6 shots being used, helping to dish out more damage before needing to reload.
  • Assuming Berserker Ace is the only damage boost in play, the Frenchman can kill Maximum Force Responders on Mayhem after being revived by someone without Combat Medic Ace, having just enough health to meet the threshold. On Death Wish or Death Sentence, Berserker Ace requires a minuscule amount of health for one-hitting Maximum Force Responders, roughly 5% health or less, including Swan Song or bleedout.
    • Underdog and/or One Handed Talent remedy this with more damage, consistently killing Maximum Force Responders in one headshot after being revived if also paired with Berserker Ace, no matter the difficulty.
      • Trigger Happy alone reaches this breakpoint this without requiring low health.

Trivia[]

  • The Frenchman Model 87 is based on the Smith & Wesson Model 3, evident from the spring-loaded latch being on the barrel rather than the frame.
  • Oddly, when reloading the Frenchman, all of the cartridges that are ejected appear to be perfectly fine, unfired cartridges with the bullets still visible, no matter how many shots were left before needing to reload. The exact same type of fresh cartridges ejected from the gun are then loaded back into the gun.
  • Applying the Opera Long Barrel to the Frenchman turns the weapon into a sawed-off version of the Smith & Wesson Model 320.
