Description
The Hailstorm Mk 5, with its 15 barrels it’s crazy enough as it is, but add in that you can fire all 15 barrels all at once and this prototype weapon is in a league of its own.

The Hailstorm Mk 5 is a primary weapon PAYDAY 2, available to those who own the McShay Weapon Pack 2.

Overview[]

The Hailstorm Mk 5 is a completely unique weapon in Payday 2. By default, it has an integral laser sight+flashlight, optical sight, and a magazine counter like the Wasp-DS's Exclusive Set. It also fires in full-auto at a monstrous 2000 RPM, tying with the XL 5.56 Microgun but with more damage and accuracy, allowing it to swiftly cut down huge groups of enemies and slay Bulldozers just as effectively, functioning like the Akimbo Krinkov but even more powerful. It also has halved recoil when aiming down the sights compared to hipfiring, a trait shared with the SG Versteckt 51D, allowing it to more reliably stay on target or fight distant enemies.

Additionally, the Hailstorm has an alternative fire mode: Volley Shot. After a brief delay, the Hailstorm fires a simultaneous 30-round burst with a single pull of the trigger, shooting a 15-pellet cloud like an extreme shotgun blast. The volley shot also pierces Shields, countering them much like a sniper rifle. With its 120 round magazine, the Hailstorm can fire up to four volleys at once, granting two different modes of overwhelming firepower.

All that said, the Hailstorm has multiple drawbacks. It is the only special weapon to suffer from damage dropoff, hindering it at long range. The weapon naturally consumes ammo astonishingly fast with only an average pickup rate, making it more dependent on Ammo bags than most other weapons with heavy use. This holds true for volley shot mode, and the volley shot also grows weaker with every round under 30 in the magazine, and may even fail to kill Shields with a half-ammo volley. Despite the shield penetration effects, the Hailstorm cannot naturally pierce the body armor of Maximum Force Responders in full auto or volley shot mode, still requiring headshot priority. Lastly, its concealment is quite poor with very few ways to improve it, making it difficult to fit into a build prioritizing Low Blow/Sneaky Bastard.

Overall, as long as the user can keep the ammo coming and know when to use its two different modes, the Hailstorm Mk 5 is truly a force to be reckoned with despite its shortcomings.

Summary[]

Pros

  • Blistering rate-of-fire, tying with the XL 5.56 Microgun, and perfectly combos with the Muscle perk deck
  • Higher accuracy and stability than both the XL 5.56 Microgun or the Vulcan Minigun
  • Unique volley shot counters Shields at a distance
    • Volley shot is extremely effective against Captain Winters and can counter Medics at close range
  • Built in gadgets assist with aiming
  • Relatively fast reload for a weapon of its archetype
  • High DPS, especially at close range, adept at slaying common crowds
  • Recoil is halved when aiming down the sights
  • Mods allow greater recoil control and accuracy, including an exclusive set with more ammo

Cons

  • High rate of fire and relatively small magazines for a weapon of its archetype ushers more frequent reloads and quickly drains ammo
  • Volley shot requires at least 30 rounds loaded for full effect, diminishes with less full magazines
    • For every 2 ammo below 30, 1 less pellet will be fired.
  • Only special weapon affected by damage dropoff, hindering long range capabilities
  • Does not pierce body armor in either firing mode unless the user has Surefire Ace
  • Average at best pickup may make it hard to sustain throughout a heist without Ammo Bags
  • Terrible concealment with minimal boosts make it difficult to use with dodge/crits
  • Expensive in-game cost
  • Exclusive set is locked behind a kill-grinding achievement

Tips[]

  • To switch to volley shot mode, simply press the fire select key, as if changing between full-auto and semi-auto for a weapon like the STRYK 18c.
  • Despite the seemingly low damage-per-shot, this weapon is noticeably enhanced via Berserker, supremely boosting its already high DPS as long as the user is comfortable at low health.
  • In full-auto mode, the weapon lacks any penetration effect, similar to any regular assault rifle or LMG. In volley shot mode, the blast pierces Shields (but NOT Maximum Force Responder armor). Each volley also instantly deducts 30 rounds from the magazine. This is effectively treated as "one" shot/damage instance, making volley shot ineffective at breaking Bulldozer visors beyond point blank range. However, if used at point blank range, the amount of shots in a single space will shatter the faceplate and often kill the Bulldozer.
    • In full-auto, the overwhelming number of damage instances make it excel at shredding off Bulldozer visors and killing the Bulldozer as soon as his face is exposed. Full-auto is generally the best mode for engaging Bulldozers.
    • The blast tends to spread out far and is affected by damage dropoff like the regular full-auto firing. This somewhat hinders it against hostile Snipers.
    • A full magazine allows the Hailstorm to fire 4 volley shot blasts before reloading.
    • There is a brief charge delay before each volley, accompanied with an electrical whine. The volley can be cancelled by sprinting, or more consistently, simply switching back to full-auto mode.
    • Volley shot mode is also treated as semi-automatic firing, needing one trigger pull per blast.
    • When aiming the gun in volley shot mode, the ammo computer displays a power meter, indicating how charged the gun is during the volley windup. If the magazine has at least 30 rounds, the computer will turn green. If the magazine has 29 rounds or less, it will turn yellow indicating a less-powerful volley, and will be red if empty.
    • Attacking an enemy with point blank volley shots also tends to counter hostile Medics; the victim may be healed with the green outline, but still killed instantly from the blast as if the Medic wasn't present.
  • When firing a volley, every 2 ammo consumed will fire 1 pellet, up to a maximum of 15 pellets.
    • Unlike shotguns, the total damage done is dependent on the number of pellets that hit the target.
    • Each pellet deals a base 80 damage before any modifiers.
    • When hunting enemy Shields with volley shots, it may be better to aim at the body as the quantity and spread means most pellets are likely to hit the head from center mass, and the pellets that still hit the body will often do enough damage to kill the shield regardless.
  • Care should be taken around Tasers more than most other weapons, as being electrocuted can waste the Hailstorm's precious ammo before resuming control.
    • There seems to be a bug where if shocked in volley shot mode, the user may rapidly charge and fire multiple volley shots faster than usual, expending more ammo.
  • Technician skills greatly improve the Hailstorm, especially Surefire and Body Expertise, both Ace.
  • The Hailstorm should be fired while aiming down the sights as much as possible, as recoil is heavily reduced this way as opposed to hipfiring. This also makes it an interesting choice to use with Rifleman basic due to the faster movement speed when aiming down the sights.
    • Prioritizing accuracy is recommended due to the halved ADS recoil, making stability negligible.
  • The Hailstorm is one of the best weapons to use with Bulletstorm and/or Swan Song Ace, temporarily alleviating its ammo issues and allowing the user to rain down copious amounts of damage when the skills are active.
    • The infinite ammo effect also fully applies to volley shot.
    • If planning on using the Hailstorm with either skill, it is a good idea to leave at least 30 rounds in the magazine before activating any skill to avoid any wasted time via reloading. This also guarantees equal strength for full-auto or volley shot depending on the situation.
    • This doubles as a SWAT Turret killer such as on The Biker Heist as long as the user has enough ammo and can directly fight the turret.
  • Fully Loaded increases total ammo by 135 rounds, to a maximum of 675 rounds total, equal to at least one full regular magazine. Acing the effect also considerably boosts its pickup rate.
    • The Exclusive Set, once unlocked, changes its total ammo to 594. Fully Loaded plus the exclusive set yields 743 maximum ammo.
  • Despite its attributes, one may find greater success using the Hailstorm as a special-killer or a 'secondary-primary', using a reliable secondary such as the Parabellum or a custom ammo Grimm 12G to handle most foes, while saving the Hailstorm against stronger special units. This may be more viable if ammo is scarce.
  • In spite of its poor concealment, one can reach a detection risk total of 19 to use with Sneaky Bastard and/or Low Blow, preferably both Ace. This requires Inner Pockets + high conceal melee like the Buzzer and Optical Illusions Ace. The secondary needs to be a Bernetti 9 equipped with a Size Doesn't Matter/Standard Issue Suppressor and a +3 concealment boost for at least 34 concealment. The Hailstorm will require a concealment stat boost plus the FRZA Grip and V2.2 Barrel.
    • The v3.8 Barrel and v2.2 Barrel both silence the Hailstorm, allowing the Hailstorm to benefit from The Professional, with the v3.8 Barrel providing more accuracy but less concealment. This also technically makes it a valid stealth weapon, but is obviously not recommended.

Achievements[]

Field Test Field Test
Kill 500 enemies with the Hailstorm Mk 5's Volley Shot mode. Unlocks the "Prototype Conversion Kit" for the Hailstorm Mk 5.

Trivia[]

  • The Hailstorm is based on two weapons: The Magpul PDR and Metal Storm MK. 5 volley gun, which just like its in-game equivalent, is capable of firing at a staggeringly high RPM (though instead of 2000 rpm like in-game, it is capable of 1 million rpm). This can be excused by the fact that downscaling the RPM would be a good idea when making it man-portable.
