The North Star is a secondary sniper rifle in PAYDAY 2, available as part of the Christmas Carol 2022 event.

To unlock this sniper rifle, the player must complete the "Lucky Star" side job during the Christmas 2022 event, in which the player must kill 100 enemies with Snowballs. The alternative unlock criteria is 2,000 kills with sniper rifles for those who missed the event.

Overview

The North Star sniper rifle is the 2nd secondary sniper rifle added in the game, and unlike the Pronghorn, it is available to all players.

It resembles a secondary version of the Contractor .308, being a semi-automatic sniper rifle with a high rate of fire and doing 160 damage per shot. However, it has very low accuracy and stability for a sniper rifle, sitting at 52 and 8 respectively. Additionally, the magazine size and reserve count is very low, having only 10 rounds and a single magazine in reserve, which results in this rifle running out of ammo if players are not careful enough.

However, it is still a semi-automatic sniper, having a high rate-of-fire and good damage, allowing it to fire off more shots than other sniper rifles, especially the Pronghorn. It also boasts a good concealment rating, shining best in builds that utilize critical hits, although it is fairly limited to medium range due to its low accuracy and stability ratings. The fact that it is a secondary sniper rifle allows a more specialized primary to be taken, such as the Piglet or the Thanatos .50 cal.

Its exclusive set increases its concealment by 3, alongside increasing accuracy and stability by 8.

The North Star has a weaker damage-ramp up compared to primary semi-automatic snipers.

Summary

Pros:

• Equipped on the secondary slot rather than the primary slot
• High rate of fire
• Decent damage, can kill most enemies in one head shot on Overkill difficulty and below
  • Damage increases slightly at long range
• High potential concealment
  • Exclusive set increases its concealment rating even further while improving both stability and accuracy

Cons:

• Low stability and lowest base accuracy of all sniper rifles
• Very low ammunition count and reserve, at 10/20
• Weapon and associated mods are locked via tedious side job criteria

Tips

• Accuracy should be improved whenever possible. Steady Grip and The Professional provide a significant accuracy boost for only a few skill points.
• Maximum concealment potential is 26 via Tiwaz Silencer, concealment stat boost, Titanium Skeleton Grip, 45 Degree Ironsights (via the Cartel Optics Mod Pack), the Cynosura Iron Sights, and Folding Stock supported with Optical Illusions. With another 30+ concealment primary, one should have no trouble benefiting from Low Blow's critical hits and/or Sneaky Bastard's dodge percentages with the North Star.
• Berserker at 10% health or less will let the North Star kill Maximum Force Responders in a single headshot on any difficulty.

UTG LED Weapon light and Laser. Although the main flashlight has a toggle switch, the laser sight component of the LED Combo is pressure-activated, meaning the laser will stay on as long as the pressure switch is depressed. This switch is not placed where it should be, however (on foregrips, magazine wells, etc...) and is instead ziptied to the main taclight, leaving no plausible mean for the user to toggle it without awkwardly moving their off hand off the weapon and gripping the attachment itself. It is functionally the same as the standard Military Red Dot Sight, but the sight's casing is tan instead of black with the line "A-10" scrawled on near the adjustment knob. The sticker on the lens cap's interior also says "I <3 Payday" instead of having a picture of an American flag. This sight was based on the Aimpoint CompM2 optic. Note(s) In its original setup, this is your standard high spec telescopic sight, but it's been fitted with some auxiliary software and hardware, which adds the following functions: Range Finder Allows you to accurately measure distances up to 200m, displayed on the actual unit and in the reticle. Practical use for this is dubious at best considering that bullets in Payday 2 use hitscan mechanics and have no simulated gravity or windage effects. Furthermore, very few in game locations exist where targets can be engaged from even remotely close to 200 meters away. However, it can be extremely helpful in obtaining the Far, Far Away achievement, as it makes identifying enemies that are at 40m or further much easier. Auto-Tagger In stealth, the scope will automatically tag any enemy you sweep your sights over, and once the alarm has been sounded, it'll auto-tag specials. This acts similarly to the effects of High Value Target Aced, and having the skill will also cause the increased damage and mark duration. Ret with a Barrett Optical Ranging System (a.k.a. Ballistic CPU) installed. The Theia Magnified Scope's in-game optic is extremely simplified compared to the real BORS. The system, when paired with a magnification scope, would show indications of humidity, environmental temperature, barometric pressure and projectile elevation/depression for precise compensation, which the in-game scope lacks, though seeing as every sniper rifle in the game uses a hitscan system to determine shot placement, the other miscellaneous functionalities are likely not needed. When aiming down the sight, there is a dim "Y" above the "M" that stands for meters. This dimmed letter would stand for Yards, a different unit of distance measurement. Since the game only uses the metric system, the reason for this being there isn't exactly clear. The Theia Magnified Scope currently has the largest magnification in the game. In Greek mythology, Theia was the Titan goddess of sight and shining light of the clear blue sky. The method of obtaining the sight is ironic to an almost bizarre degree as it's intended for precision shots at long range and not for something that in reality would be haphazard to the point of being insane (i.e. Zip-line Rifling).
