Sociopath is an overkill weapon in PAYDAY 3, added as part of the Jacket Character Pack DLC.
Overview[]
A seemingly normal baseball bat made out of wood, the Sociopath's baseball bat is one of Jacket's iconic weapons used throughout the Hotline Miami series.
Once the OVERKILL meter is full, players can equip the bat and begin a adrenaline-fueled melee rampage, draining the meter and only stopping if the player manually unequips the bat, is stunned by a Cloaker, or the OVERKILL meter runs out. The player's sprinting speed also increases dramatically. The meter acts as a replacement health bar, draining only when taking damage or after a certain period of time has passed, but the meter (and thereby the duration of the Sociopath's bat) can be extended a little bit more per kill if a certain Overskill level is achieved.
Although looking somewhat pitiful as a weapon, the Sociopath's baseball bat is an incredibly potent OVERKILL weapon capable of mowing down waves of enemies with each swing. The baseball bat can be swung in a light and heavy attack dependent on whether the user uses the left or right mouse button, though both attack types have the ability to hit multiple enemies if aimed correctly. The heavy attack is especially deadly, as although the weapon regularly one-shots most normal and special units, the heavy attack is almost always guaranteed to strike multiple enemies at once, and will always stagger Shield units.
At its strongest with all Overskill levels achieved, the Sociopath's baseball bat becomes a nearly-unstoppable force that constantly regenerate its meter on kill. Due to its high-damage annihilating most enemy units, this will more often than not turn players into nearly invulnerable heisters incapable of being downed (outside of Cloakers and potentially Bulldozers) and wiping out swathes of enemies.
While powerful, the Sociopath's baseball bat suffers a unique drawback not seen from other OVERKILL weapons: it cannot be dropped, and once unequipped, the OVERKILL meter will immediately become empty, forcing players to refill the meter again. This also means that, if downed by a Cloaker, the meter will be immediately drained, the bat unequipped and the players will be forced to refill the OVERKILL meter from the beginning. Additionally, the bat's light attack is incapable of staggering Shield units, forcing a heavy attack or to simply flank around them. Attacking a Bulldozer with this baseball bat is also an extremely risky and borderline suicidal move; although you'll likely survive getting kicked or shot at by a Bulldozer, unless you have achieved a certain Overskill perk, you are wasting your Sociopath skill by having the entire meter drain almost in an instant.
Summary[]
Pros:
- One shots most normal and special units
- Can alternate between light and heavy attacks
- Both attacks can hit multiple enemies at once
- Heavy attacks can be charged
- Heister's sprinting and walking speed increases immensely while under the Sociopath's effects
- Usefulness of the skill increases tremendously as players progress on the Overskill line
- OVERKILL meter can be regenerated on kill
Cons:
- Ill-advised to use against Bulldozers
- Struggles against Shield units
- Cloakers severely stunt your Sociopath streak
- No ranged options (obviously)
- OVERKILL meter drains faster the longer you use it and the more enemies you kill
- Can be partially counteracted with an Overskill level that allow users to regenerate the meter on kill
- Automatically drains the meter in full once unequipped
Overskill Line[]
| Base Overskill: Tier Base | Base Skill |
|---|---|
| If you have a full OVERKILL meter, you pull out a baseball bat on activation and drop any bag or body you are currently carrying. While you're wielding the baseball bat, all incoming damage is done to your OVERKILL meter instead. You can use light or heavy swings with the bat, inflicting light or heavy damage. You'll wield the bat until your OVERKILL meter reaches 0 or until you are downed. If you press the OVERKILL button while wielding the bat, your OVERKILL meter drops to 0. (This ability replaces your OVERKILL weapon). | |
| Frenzy: Tier 1 | 1500 EXP |
|---|---|
| When there are 3 enemies within5 meters of you while using this ability, you take 20% less damage. | |
| Bloodlust: Tier 2 | 3500 EXP |
|---|---|
| Killing an enemy while this ability is active will restore 20%^ of your OVERKILL meter. | |
| Rabid: Tier 3 | 7500 EXP |
|---|---|
| As long as you are wielding your baseball bat, you are immune to stagger, stun, slow, disabling effects, and effects that prevent you from sprinting. | |
| Berserker: Tier 4 | 11500 EXP |
|---|---|
| Killing an enemy while this ability is active will restore 5 health points. | |
| Master of Mayhem: Tier 5 | 16500 EXP |
|---|---|
| Whenever you kill an enemy with a bat, enemies within 5 meters of that enemy will enter a panic and miss all their shots for 5 seconds. | |
Trivia[]
- The Sociopath's baseball bat is currently the only melee weapon in PAYDAY 3.
- A melee weapon system has been one of the game's most highly requested features, after offline mode, skill rework and the Armor 2.0 rework.
- Prior to the Sociopath's addition, there was debate as to how such an Overkill weapon could be implemented, including community memes about how Shade will call Bile to drop a baseball bat for players to use, mostly noting the nonsensical nature of such request as wasting helicopter fuel just to deliver a regular bat rather than a heavy weapon (such as the HET-5 Red Fox).
- The Sociopath's baseball bat is prominently featured in Jacket's promotional trailers.
- The internal name is a reference to a sticker seen on the end that reads "El Puñetazo". This directly translates to "The punch".
- When equipped with the bat as Jacket, there are several unique things specifically tailored to him.
- Lines that directly reference the bat play during both the activation and ending of Sociopath.
- The idle animation seen in the loadout screen.
- Upon activation, the track "Arms Outstretched" will play until the meter runs out.
- The track "Arms Outstretched" references both the iconic Jacket quote, and the Hotline Miami soundtrack.
